What Is Elleste Duet?

Elleste Duet is a hormone replacement therapy that comes in 1 mg and 2 mg tablets. It is used to relieve the symptoms of menopause; a natural sign of aging in which female hormone levels drop, significant hormonal changes happen and women are no long able to become pregnant naturally.

The tablets are prescribed to women who still have an intact womb. It is a combined treatment with pills containing one of two active ingredients - estradiol (a form of oestrogen, the major female sex hormone) and norethisterone (a synthetic type of the progesterone hormone that plays an important role in menstruation and pregnancy).

Elleste Duet is available in three types. A pack of 1 mg tablets includes 16 white estradiol tablets and 12 green tablets containing 1 mg norethisterone and 1 mg estradiol. The 2 mg pack includes 16 2 mg orange estradiol tablets and 12 grey tablets containing 2 mg estradiol and 1 mg norethisterone. The third type is Elleste Duet Conti; white tablets which contain 2 mg estradiol and 1 mg norethisterone.

What Is Elleste Duet Used For?

The estradiol tablets in Elleste Duet can increase the falling oestrogen levels in your body during menopause, relieving symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, vaginal itching and mood swings.

Norethisterone is a synthetic type of the progesterone hormone that plays an important role in menstruation and pregnancy. As taking an oestrogen-only HRT could risk causing the build-up of the womb lining (endometrial hyperplasia), a combined HRT treatment that contains progesterone, like Elleste Duet, can help to shed your womb lining and avoid this problem.

Elleste Duet and Bleeding

Elleste Duet 1 mg and 2 mg typically cause a menstrual bleed nearer to the end of your monthly cycle. This is nothing to be concerned about. On the other hand, Elleste Duet Conti doesn’t normally cause a monthly bleed, although you have some light vaginal bleeding (spotting).

Bleeding may be due to the increased hormone levels that HRT treatments such as Elleste Duet cause. Once your body gets used to the higher hormone levels, bleeding can subside.

Novofem vs Elleste Duet

Like Elleste Duet, Novofem is a sequential combined HRT treatment which comes in 1 mg tablets. Novofem is recognised as an alternative HRT treatment to Elleste Duet, and your doctor may interchange them if either treatment is unavailable.

Femoston vs Elleste Duet

Femoston and Elleste Duet are both sequential combined HRT treatments taken over a 28-day cycle. They contain different active ingredients – both contain estradiol as an oestrogen supplement, however, while Elleste Duet contains norethisterone as its progesterone supplement, Novofem contains dydrogesterone.

When taking Novofem, you will take estradiol tablets for 14 days, followed by a combined tablet which contains oestradiol and dydrogesterone for 14 days. Your doctor may prescribe Elleste Duet as an alternative to Femoston, as it may be more effective depending on how your body reacts to the treatment.

Elleste Duet Reviews

Reviewers online have cited the ability of Elleste Duet to minimise menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes and night sweats, as well as improve their mood. In a matter of weeks, users have reported that taking Elleste Duet tablets was able to reduce menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes, fatigue and anxiety. Among the side effects commonly highlighted by users are spotting, breast pain and headaches.

Can I buy Elleste Duet over the counter?

You can’t buy Elleste Duet over the counter in the UK. Before you can purchase the HRT treatment, your suitability for the tablets will need to be confirmed by a doctor. Your prescription can then be issued, and you will be able to buy Elleste Duet from your local or online pharmacy.

Why not buy Elleste Duet tablets from Cloud Pharmacy’s online pharmacy? Once you have completed a brief consultation, which is approved by Cloud’s online pharmacist, your medication will be dispensed and dispatched in a discreet package with our next-day delivery service. We also offer Elleste Solo tablets to combat symptoms of menopause.

Elleste Duet Dosage

Elleste Duet is not to be used by children. The standard adult dose is one tablet, once per day. With Elleste Duet 1 mg, you would take the white tablets for 16 days followed by the green tablets for 12 days, and with Elleste Duet 2 mg, you would take the orange tablets for 16 days followed by the grey tablets for 12 days.

For treating menopausal symptoms, adult women will be given the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration. You might be prescribed the higher, 2 mg dose of Elleste Duet to prevent osteoporosis (a disease that weakens your bones) if it’s thought you have a high risk of fractures.

How Long Does Elleste Duet Take To Work?

It might take a few weeks for you to notice improvement in your menopausal symptoms after starting to take an HRT such as Elleste Duet. However, it may take up to three months for you to feel the full benefit of the treatment. Your doctor would normally ask you to use a new HRT treatment for at least three months to assess its effectiveness.

Elleste Duet tablets should be taken as prescribed until your doctor advises you to stop the treatment. You shouldn’t stop an HRT treatment in the middle of a treatment cycle, as this could cause a significant drop in hormone levels which can result in menopause symptoms returning.

How to Take Elleste Duet

The pill strip in your Elleste Duet pack will show which tablet you should take next. You should swallow Elleste Duet tablets whole with water. They can be taken with or without food.

If you forget to take an Elleste Duet tablet, take the tablet when you remember if it’s within 12 hours of when it is normally taken. If you remember after 12 hours, discard the missed tablet and take your next tablet at the usual time the following day. If you have missed a tablet, you should be aware that you are more likely to have spotting or breakthrough bleeding.
