Overview

Treatments for Bacterial Eye Infections

Bacterial conjunctivitis is a common eye infection characterised by redness, a sticky or yellow-green discharge, and eyelids that may be stuck together in the morning. It is highly contagious and can spread easily through contact with contaminated hands, towels or surfaces. Most cases of bacterial conjunctivitis respond well to over-the-counter antibiotic treatment.

Cloud Pharmacy stocks antibiotic eye treatments for bacterial conjunctivitis. All products are dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy team.

Who Are These Treatments For?

Adults and children aged 2 and over with suspected bacterial conjunctivitis (redness, sticky discharge, crusty eyelids)
These products should only be used for bacterial eye infections, not for viral or allergic conjunctivitis. If you are unsure about the cause of your symptoms, speak to your pharmacist or GP.

Important Safety Information

Use chloramphenicol for the full five-day course, even if symptoms improve before then, to ensure the infection is fully cleared
If symptoms do not improve within 48 hours, or worsen at any point, see your pharmacist, optician or GP
Do not share eye drops or ointments between individuals
Remove contact lenses during treatment

Available Treatments

Chloramphenicol Eye Ointment 1%

Chloramphenicol is a broad-spectrum antibiotic effective against a wide range of bacteria that cause conjunctivitis. The ointment is applied inside the lower eyelid and is particularly useful at bedtime, as it remains in contact with the eye for longer while you sleep. It is applied three to four times daily for five days.

FAQ

How do I know if my eye infection is bacterial or viral?

Bacterial conjunctivitis typically produces a thick, sticky, yellow-green discharge and may cause the eyelids to stick together, particularly in the morning. Viral conjunctivitis tends to produce a more watery discharge and is often associated with a cold. If you are unsure, speak to your pharmacist - they can help determine whether antibiotic treatment is appropriate.
