Understanding Haemorrhoids and Piles

Haemorrhoids, commonly known as piles, are swollen blood vessels in and around the rectum and anus. They are extremely common; it is estimated that around half of all adults in the UK will experience haemorrhoids at some point in their lives. Symptoms can include itching, discomfort, pain, swelling around the anus, and bright red blood after a bowel movement.

Haemorrhoids can be internal (inside the rectum, usually painless but may cause bleeding) or external (under the skin around the anus, which can be itchy and painful). They are often caused by straining during bowel movements, prolonged sitting, pregnancy, chronic constipation or diarrhoea, and a low-fibre diet.

Cloud Pharmacy stocks over 210 haemorrhoid treatments, including creams, ointments, gels and suppositories from trusted UK brands. All products are dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy team and delivered in discreet packaging to your door. If you are unsure which treatment is right for you, our pharmacists are available to help through our free online consultation service.

Who Are These Treatments For?

Most haemorrhoid treatments available through Cloud Pharmacy are suitable for adults aged 18 and over. These treatments may be appropriate if you are experiencing:

  • Itching, soreness or irritation around the anus
  • Swelling or a lump near the anus
  • Discomfort or pain during or after bowel movements
  • Small amounts of bright red blood on toilet paper or in the bowl after a bowel movement
  • A feeling of fullness or incomplete emptying after using the toilet

If you experience significant rectal bleeding, persistent pain, a noticeable change in bowel habits, or bleeding that is dark in colour, you should see your GP. These symptoms may indicate a more serious condition that requires investigation.

Important Safety Information

Before using any haemorrhoid treatment, you should:

  • Read the patient information leaflet supplied with the product
  • Products containing hydrocortisone (such as Anusol HC and Anusol Plus HC) should not be used for more than seven consecutive days unless directed by a doctor, as prolonged use of corticosteroids can thin the skin
  • Do not use haemorrhoid treatments if you have an infection in the area unless advised by a healthcare professional
  • Tell your pharmacist if you are pregnant or breastfeeding - some treatments may not be suitable
Consult your pharmacist or doctor if symptoms do not improve within seven days of treatment

If you experience severe pain, a large amount of bleeding, or a hard, painful lump near the anus that does not reduce in size, seek medical advice promptly, as you may have a thrombosed external haemorrhoid.

Available Treatment Types

Cloud Pharmacy offers haemorrhoid treatments across three main categories. Each format works differently, so choosing the right one depends on your symptoms and preferences.

Creams, Ointments and Gels

Topical treatments are applied directly to the affected area and provide relief from itching, pain, swelling and discomfort. Creams tend to be lighter and absorb quickly, while ointments create a protective barrier and may be more soothing for dry or cracked skin. Gels such as Preparation H Clear Gel offer a non-greasy alternative. Brands available include Anusol, Germoloids and Preparation H. Some products, such as Anusol Plus HC, contain hydrocortisone to reduce inflammation more effectively, these are suitable for short-term use only.

Suppositories

Suppositories are small, solid treatments inserted into the rectum. They dissolve internally and are particularly effective for treating internal haemorrhoids where topical creams cannot easily reach. Brands such as Anusol Suppositories and Germoloids Suppositories deliver active ingredients directly to the affected area. Anusol Plus HC Suppositories contain hydrocortisone for more targeted anti-inflammatory relief.

FAQ

How long do haemorrhoids take to go away?

Mild haemorrhoids often improve within a few days to a week with appropriate treatment, dietary changes (increasing fibre intake) and adequate fluid consumption. If symptoms persist beyond seven days of using over-the-counter treatment, speak to your pharmacist or GP for further advice.

What is the difference between creams and suppositories?

Creams and ointments are applied externally and are most effective for external haemorrhoids causing itching, soreness and swelling. Suppositories are inserted into the rectum and are better suited for internal haemorrhoids that cannot be reached with topical application.

Can I use hydrocortisone haemorrhoid products long-term?

No. Products containing hydrocortisone (such as Anusol Plus HC) should not be used for more than seven consecutive days unless directed by a doctor. Prolonged use can cause thinning of the skin and other side effects. If symptoms persist, speak to your pharmacist or GP about alternative options.

Can I prevent haemorrhoids from coming back?

You can reduce the risk of recurrence by eating a high-fibre diet, drinking plenty of water, avoiding straining during bowel movements, staying physically active, and avoiding sitting for prolonged periods. If constipation is a recurring issue, your pharmacist may recommend a gentle stool softener.

When should I see a doctor about haemorrhoids?

You should see your GP if you experience heavy or persistent rectal bleeding, bleeding that is dark or mixed with stools, a hard lump near the anus that does not reduce, persistent pain that does not respond to treatment, or a change in bowel habits. These symptoms may require further investigation to rule out other conditions.
