Caring for Your Eye Health
Eye problems are extremely common, ranging from dry, tired eyes caused by screen use and central heating to allergic eye symptoms triggered by pollen or dust, and minor eye infections such as conjunctivitis. Most mild eye conditions can be effectively managed with over-the-counter treatments, though persistent or severe symptoms should always be assessed by a pharmacist, optician or GP.
Cloud Pharmacy stocks over 230 eye care products, including lubricating eye drops for dry eyes, allergy eye drops for hayfever and irritants, antibiotic treatments for minor eye infections, eyelid cleansing wipes for blepharitis, and contact lens solutions. All products are dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy team and delivered to your door.
Who Are These Treatments For?
These products may be appropriate if you are experiencing:
- Dry, gritty or tired eyes (often associated with screen use, air conditioning, or contact lens wear)
- Itchy, red or watery eyes due to hayfever or other allergies
- Sticky, crusty or inflamed eyelids (blepharitis)
- Symptoms of a minor eye infection, such as bacterial conjunctivitis (redness, discharge, sticky eyes)
- A need for contact lens cleaning and conditioning solutions
If you experience sudden vision loss, severe eye pain, a significant change in vision, flashing lights or floaters, or a chemical injury to the eye, seek urgent medical attention at A&E or call 999.
Important Safety Information
- Do not use eye drops past their expiry date or beyond the recommended period after opening (usually 28 days for multi-dose bottles)
- Remove contact lenses before using eye drops unless the product is specifically labelled as safe for use with lenses
- Chloramphenicol eye ointment and drops (for bacterial conjunctivitis) should not be used in children under two years of age without medical advice
- If symptoms of an eye infection do not improve within 48 hours of starting treatment, or if they worsen, see your pharmacist, optician or GP
- Do not share eye drops or ointments between individuals, as this can spread infection
Available Treatment Types
Lubricating Eye Drops (Dry Eyes)
Dry eye drops work by supplementing the eye's natural tear film to relieve dryness, irritation and discomfort. Products containing hyaluronic acid (Hycosan, Hylo-Tear, Hylo-Forte) provide long-lasting moisture. Hypromellose and carbomer-based drops offer effective relief at a lower price point. Preservative-free formulations are available and are recommended for frequent use or for contact lens wearers.
Allergy Eye Drops
Allergy eye drops relieve itchy, red and watery eyes caused by hayfever and other airborne allergens. Products containing sodium cromoglicate (Opticrom) work by stabilising mast cells to prevent histamine release. Optrex Allergy and Murine Hayfever drops also provide targeted relief. These can be used alongside oral antihistamines for comprehensive allergy management.
Eye Infection Treatments
Chloramphenicol eye ointment and Brolene eye drops are available over the counter for the treatment of acute bacterial conjunctivitis. GoldenEye antibiotic ointment is another option. These should only be used for confirmed or suspected bacterial eye infections (characterised by redness, discharge and sticky eyelids) and should not be used for viral or allergic conjunctivitis.
Eyelid Wipes and Cleansers
Eyelid hygiene products such as Blephaclean wipes and Blephasol lotion are used to clean the eyelid margins and manage blepharitis, a common condition causing sore, red and crusty eyelids. Regular eyelid cleaning can help control symptoms and prevent flare-ups.
Contact Lens Solutions
Bausch & Lomb Boston solutions are available for cleaning and conditioning rigid gas-permeable contact lenses. These are essential for maintaining lens hygiene and comfort.

FAQ
How do I know if I have dry eyes or an eye infection?
Dry eyes typically cause a gritty, burning or tired sensation without significant discharge. Eye infections (bacterial conjunctivitis) usually produce a sticky or yellow-green discharge, and eyelids may be stuck together in the morning. If you are unsure, speak to your pharmacist or optician for guidance.
Can I use eye drops while wearing contact lenses?
Most eye drops require you to remove contact lenses before application and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them. Some preservative-free drops are specifically designed for use with contact lenses. Check the product label or ask our pharmacy team.
How long should I use chloramphenicol for an eye infection?
Chloramphenicol should typically be used for five days, even if symptoms improve before then, to ensure the infection is fully cleared. If symptoms do not improve within 48 hours, or worsen at any point, see your pharmacist, optician or GP.
When should I see a doctor about my eyes?
Seek urgent medical attention if you experience sudden loss of vision, severe eye pain, flashing lights or new floaters, a chemical splash to the eye, or an eye injury. For persistent redness, discharge, or vision changes that do not respond to treatment, see your optician or GP.
