Medicated Hair Care and Hair Loss Treatments
Scalp conditions such as dandruff, seborrhoeic dermatitis, psoriasis and hair loss are common concerns that can affect confidence and quality of life. While many scalp conditions are manageable with the right treatment, persistent or worsening symptoms should be discussed with a pharmacist or GP to ensure an appropriate treatment plan.
Cloud Pharmacy stocks a range of medicated shampoos for scalp conditions and clinically proven hair loss treatments. All products are dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy team and delivered discreetly to your door.
Who Are These Treatments For?
These treatments may be appropriate if you are experiencing:
- Persistent dandruff that does not respond to regular shampoo
- A flaky, itchy or irritated scalp
- Scalp psoriasis or seborrhoeic dermatitis
- Hereditary hair loss (male or female pattern hair loss)
- Thinning hair or a receding hairline
Regaine (minoxidil) is suitable for adults aged 18 and over experiencing hereditary hair loss. Medicated shampoos are generally suitable for adults and older adolescents - check individual product pages for age-specific guidance.
Important Safety Information
- Regaine should only be used for hereditary hair loss - it is not effective for hair loss caused by medication, nutritional deficiencies, or other medical conditions
- Regaine must be used consistently for at least four months before results may become visible. Stopping treatment may result in hair loss resuming within three to four months
- Tell your pharmacist if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a heart condition or high blood pressure before using Regaine
- Medicated shampoos containing ketoconazole (Nizoral) or coal tar (Polytar, Capasal) should be used as directed - overuse can cause scalp irritation or dryness
- If scalp symptoms worsen or do not improve after four weeks of treatment, consult your pharmacist or GP
Available Treatment Types
Medicated Shampoos
Medicated shampoos are formulated to treat specific scalp conditions. Nizoral contains ketoconazole, an antifungal agent effective against the yeast (Malassezia) that contributes to dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis. Polytar and Capasal contain coal tar, which helps to slow the rapid skin cell growth associated with scalp psoriasis and can relieve itching and flaking. These shampoos are typically used two to three times per week and can be alternated with your regular shampoo.
Regaine Hair Loss Treatment
Regaine contains minoxidil, the only clinically proven over-the-counter treatment for hereditary hair loss (androgenetic alopecia). It is available as a scalp solution (applied with a dropper) and as a foam (applied directly to the scalp). Regaine works by increasing blood flow to the hair follicles, which may stimulate hair regrowth and slow further hair loss. Regaine Extra Strength (5% minoxidil) is available for men, and Regaine for Women (2% minoxidil) is available as a regular-strength solution. Results vary between individuals.

FAQ
How long does Regaine take to work?
Most people need to use Regaine consistently for at least three to four months before noticing visible results. Some people experience an initial period of increased shedding during the first few weeks. This is normal and usually temporary. If no improvement is seen after four months, speak to your pharmacist or GP.
Can I use medicated shampoo every day?
Most medicated shampoos are designed for use two to three times per week, not daily. On non-treatment days, you can use your regular shampoo. Overuse of medicated shampoos may cause scalp dryness or irritation. Follow the instructions on the product packaging.
What happens if I stop using Regaine?
If you stop using Regaine, any hair regrowth achieved during treatment is likely to be lost within three to four months. Continued use is required to maintain results. Regaine does not cure hair loss; it supports hair growth for as long as it is used.
When should I see a doctor about hair loss?
You should see your GP if your hair loss is sudden or occurs in patches, if it is accompanied by other symptoms such as fatigue, weight changes or skin changes, if you are a woman experiencing significant hair thinning, or if you suspect your hair loss may be related to a medical condition or medication.
