Overview

Allergy and Hayfever Nasal Sprays

Nasal congestion, sneezing and a runny nose are among the most bothersome symptoms of hayfever and allergic rhinitis. While oral antihistamines can help, nasal sprays deliver treatment directly to the nasal passages, providing targeted relief where symptoms originate. For moderate to severe nasal symptoms, corticosteroid nasal sprays are considered one of the most effective treatments available.

There are two main types of allergy nasal spray. Corticosteroid nasal sprays reduce inflammation in the nasal passages and are effective for congestion, sneezing and a runny nose. Decongestant nasal sprays provide fast, short-term relief from a blocked nose by narrowing blood vessels in the nasal passages, but should not be used for more than seven consecutive days.

Cloud Pharmacy stocks a range of allergy nasal sprays from trusted UK brands, including both corticosteroid and decongestant options. All products are dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy team and delivered to your door.

Who Are These Treatments For?

Allergy nasal sprays are generally suitable for adults aged 18 and over. Some products may be suitable for younger age groups; always check the individual product page and patient information leaflet.

These products may be appropriate if you are experiencing:

  • A blocked, congested or stuffy nose caused by hayfever or allergic rhinitis
  • Frequent sneezing triggered by pollen, dust or other allergens
  • A runny or itchy nose during allergy season
  • Nasal symptoms that are not fully controlled by oral antihistamines alone

If you experience persistent nosebleeds, facial pain with a high temperature, or loss of smell that does not resolve, speak to your GP. These symptoms may indicate a condition requiring further investigation.

Important Safety Information

  • Decongestant nasal sprays (such as Otrivine) should not be used for more than seven consecutive days, as prolonged use can cause rebound congestion (rhinitis medicamentosa), where the nose becomes more blocked when the spray is stopped
  • Corticosteroid nasal sprays (such as Beconase and Pirinase) are safe for longer-term use during allergy season when used as directed. They may take several days to reach full effectiveness
  • Do not use two decongestant products at the same time (for example, a decongestant nasal spray and decongestant tablets)
  • Tell your pharmacist if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have glaucoma, high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, thyroid problems, or an enlarged prostate
  • If you have had recent nasal surgery or injury, do not use nasal sprays without medical advice
  • Read the patient information leaflet for instructions on correct spray technique, as improper use can reduce effectiveness and increase the risk of nosebleeds

Available Treatments

Corticosteroid Nasal Sprays

Beconase Hayfever Nasal Spray (Beclometasone 50mcg)

Beconase contains beclometasone, a corticosteroid that reduces inflammation in the nasal passages. It is effective for treating sneezing, a runny nose, nasal congestion and itching caused by hayfever and allergic rhinitis. Beconase is sprayed into each nostril twice daily (morning and evening). It may take several days of regular use to reach full effectiveness, so starting treatment before hayfever season begins can provide better symptom control. Beconase is available without a prescription and is suitable for adults aged 18 and over.

Pirinase Hayfever Nasal Spray (Fluticasone Propionate 50mcg)

Pirinase contains fluticasone propionate, a newer corticosteroid that provides 24-hour relief from hayfever nasal symptoms with once-daily dosing (two sprays into each nostril, once daily). It is one of the most effective over-the-counter treatments for moderate to severe hayfever nasal symptoms. Pirinase is suitable for adults aged 18 and over.

Decongestant Nasal Sprays

Otrivine Nasal Spray (Xylometazoline)

Otrivine contains xylometazoline, a decongestant that works by narrowing the blood vessels in the nasal passages to reduce swelling and ease congestion. It provides fast relief, typically within five to ten minutes. Otrivine is intended for short-term use only (no more than seven days) to avoid rebound congestion. It can be used alongside a corticosteroid nasal spray if needed, but check with your pharmacist first.

FAQ

How long does it take for a corticosteroid nasal spray to work?

Corticosteroid nasal sprays such as Beconase and Pirinase may take two to three days to begin providing noticeable relief, with full effectiveness typically reached within one to two weeks of regular use. They work by reducing the underlying inflammation in the nasal passages rather than providing instant symptom relief. For this reason, starting treatment before hayfever season is recommended for best results.

Why can I only use decongestant nasal sprays for seven days?

Using decongestant sprays such as Otrivine for more than seven consecutive days can lead to rebound congestion (rhinitis medicamentosa). This occurs because the nasal passages become dependent on the spray and swell up more than before when the spray is stopped, creating a cycle of increasing use. If you need longer-term nasal congestion relief, a corticosteroid nasal spray is a safer option.

Can I use a nasal spray and antihistamine tablets together?

Yes. Corticosteroid nasal sprays and oral antihistamines work through different mechanisms and can safely be used together. This combination is often recommended by pharmacists for moderate to severe hayfever, as the nasal spray targets nasal inflammation while the antihistamine provides broader systemic relief. You should not combine a decongestant nasal spray with decongestant tablets.

When should I see a doctor about nasal symptoms?

See your GP if over-the-counter treatments are not controlling your symptoms, if you experience frequent nosebleeds, if you have persistent facial pain or headache, if you notice a loss of smell that does not resolve, or if nasal congestion is only on one side. These symptoms may require further investigation.
