Overview
Treating Insect Bites and Stings
Insect bites and stings are common, particularly during the warmer months when mosquitoes, midges, wasps, bees, horseflies and other insects are most active. Most bites and stings cause a localised allergic reaction at the site, resulting in redness, swelling, itching and pain. While these reactions are usually mild and self-limiting, the itching can be persistent and uncomfortable, and scratching can increase the risk of secondary infection.
Antihistamine creams applied directly to the affected area can help reduce itching and inflammation, providing targeted relief at the site of the bite or sting. They work by blocking the effects of histamine in the skin, which is the chemical responsible for the localised allergic reaction.
Cloud Pharmacy stocks bite and sting creams from trusted UK brands. All products are dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy team and delivered to your door.
Who Are These Treatments For?
Bite and sting creams are generally suitable for adults and children. Check the individual product page for age-specific guidance.
These products may be appropriate if you have:
- A localised reaction to an insect bite or sting (redness, swelling, itching at the site)
- Itching from mosquito, midge, horsefly or other insect bites
- Mild swelling and irritation following a wasp or bee sting (after the sting has been removed)
- Itching from stinging nettles or other minor skin irritants
If a bite or sting causes swelling that spreads significantly beyond the immediate area, difficulty breathing, dizziness, nausea, swelling of the face or throat, or a widespread rash, seek urgent medical attention as this may indicate anaphylaxis. Call 999 if you suspect a severe allergic reaction.
Important Safety Information
- Apply bite and sting cream only to unbroken skin. Do not apply to open wounds, cuts, or areas of broken or infected skin
- Do not apply to large areas of the body or use for prolonged periods without medical advice
- Avoid contact with the eyes, mouth and mucous membranes
- If the bite or sting area shows signs of infection (increasing redness, warmth, pus, red streaks), seek medical advice rather than relying on antihistamine cream alone
- Tell your pharmacist if you are pregnant or breastfeeding before using these products
- If symptoms do not improve within three days or are getting worse, speak to your pharmacist or GP

Anthisan Cream (Mepyramine Maleate 2%)
Anthisan is the leading over-the-counter bite and sting cream in the UK. It contains mepyramine maleate, a topical antihistamine that works by blocking histamine at the site of the bite or sting to reduce itching, inflammation and discomfort. Anthisan can be applied directly to the affected area up to three times daily. It is suitable for use on insect bites, stings, stinging nettles and other minor skin irritations. Anthisan is generally well tolerated; occasional skin irritation at the application site may occur.

FAQ
How quickly does Anthisan work?
Anthisan typically begins to relieve itching within 15 to 20 minutes of application. It works by blocking histamine locally at the site of the bite or sting. For best results, apply the cream as soon as possible after the bite or sting occurs. You can reapply up to three times daily as needed.
Can I use bite cream and oral antihistamines at the same time?
In most cases, yes. Topical antihistamine creams and oral antihistamines work in different ways and can be used together. However, if you are using multiple antihistamine products, check with your pharmacist to make sure you are not exceeding safe doses.
How should I treat a bee or wasp sting before applying cream?
If stung by a bee, carefully scrape out the sting using the edge of a bank card or fingernail. Do not squeeze it, as this can release more venom. Wasp stings do not usually remain in the skin. Wash the area with soap and water, apply a cold compress for up to 10 minutes to reduce swelling, then apply antihistamine cream to relieve itching. Raise the affected area if possible.
When should I see a doctor about an insect bite or sting?
See your GP or call NHS 111 if the redness and swelling are getting worse, if you develop a fever or feel generally unwell, if there are signs of infection (pus, increasing warmth, red streaks), or if the bite or sting area has not improved within a few days. Call 999 if you experience any symptoms of anaphylaxis.
