Overview
Chickenpox Care for Children
Chickenpox is a common childhood illness caused by the varicella-zoster virus. It causes an itchy, blistering rash along with a mild fever and general discomfort. Most cases in children are mild and resolve within one to two weeks without treatment. The main focus of care is relieving itching (to prevent scratching and scarring), managing fever and keeping the child comfortable.
Cloud Pharmacy stocks products to help manage chickenpox symptoms in children. All products are dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy team.
Important Safety Information
Do not give aspirin or ibuprofen to children with chickenpox, as ibuprofen may increase the risk of serious skin infections. Use paracetamol (Calpol) only for fever and pain
Keep nails short to reduce scratching and the risk of secondary infection and scarring
See your GP if the skin around the blisters becomes hot, red and painful (signs of infection), if your child is dehydrated, or if your child is very unwell
Available Treatments
Calamine Cream/Lotion
Calamine is a traditional remedy that helps soothe the itching associated with chickenpox. It can be applied directly to the spots to provide a cooling, calming effect. It is safe for children and can be reapplied as needed.
