Treating Digestive and Stomach Problems
Digestive issues such as heartburn, indigestion, acid reflux, bloating and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) are among the most common reasons people visit a pharmacy. While these conditions are usually manageable with over-the-counter treatments and dietary adjustments, persistent or severe digestive symptoms should be discussed with a GP to rule out underlying conditions.

Who Are These Treatments For?

Important Safety Information
- Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) such as omeprazole and esomeprazole (Nexium) are intended for short-term use (up to 2 weeks) without prescription. If symptoms persist, see your GP
- Antacids should not be taken at the same time as certain other medicines, as they can affect absorption - take them at least 2 hours apart from other medications
- Buscopan should be used with caution in people with glaucoma, an enlarged prostate, or certain heart conditions
- If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, some antacids and digestive treatments may not be suitable - check with your pharmacist
Available Treatment Types
Antacids
Antacids such as Rennie, Gaviscon and Alka-Seltzer work by neutralising excess stomach acid to provide fast relief from heartburn and indigestion. Gaviscon also forms a protective raft on top of the stomach contents to prevent acid from rising into the oesophagus (acid reflux). These provide quick, short-term relief and are suitable for occasional use.
Acid Reducers (PPIs and H2 Blockers)
Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) such as omeprazole and esomeprazole (Nexium Control) reduce the amount of acid the stomach produces. They are more effective than antacids for persistent heartburn and are taken once daily, usually in the morning before food. Over-the-counter PPIs are intended for use for up to two weeks. If symptoms continue beyond this, see your GP.
IBS and Stomach Cramp Relief
Buscopan (hyoscine butylbromide) is an antispasmodic that relaxes the muscles of the stomach and bowel to relieve cramps, spasms and bloating associated with IBS. Buscopan IBS Relief is specifically formulated for IBS symptoms, while Buscopan Cramps targets general stomach cramps. Peppermint oil capsules (Colpermin) are another option for IBS-related bloating and discomfort.

FAQ
What is the difference between antacids and PPIs?
Antacids (such as Rennie and Gaviscon) neutralise stomach acid that has already been produced, providing fast but temporary relief lasting 1–3 hours. PPIs (such as omeprazole and Nexium) reduce the amount of acid the stomach produces at the source, providing longer-lasting relief over 24 hours but taking 1–3 days to reach full effect. PPIs are better suited for frequent symptoms.
How long can I take omeprazole without a prescription?
Over-the-counter omeprazole and esomeprazole are licensed for use for up to two weeks to treat symptoms of reflux and heartburn. If your symptoms have not improved after two weeks, or if they return after stopping treatment, see your GP. Long-term PPI use should be supervised by a doctor.
When should I see a doctor about digestive symptoms?
See your GP if you have heartburn or indigestion on most days for three weeks or more, difficulty swallowing, persistent vomiting, unexplained weight loss, blood in your vomit or stools, or severe abdominal pain. These symptoms may require further investigation.
