Overview

Relieving Itchy, Watery Eyes Caused by Allergies

Allergic conjunctivitis is one of the most common eye conditions in the UK, affecting millions of people each year during hayfever season and beyond. It occurs when the eyes come into contact with an allergen such as pollen, dust mites, pet dander or mould spores, triggering the release of histamine and causing symptoms including itching, redness, watering and puffiness.

While oral antihistamines can help manage general allergy symptoms, targeted allergy eye drops deliver relief directly to the affected area and are often more effective for eye-specific symptoms. They can be used on their own or alongside oral antihistamines and nasal sprays for more comprehensive symptom control.

Cloud Pharmacy stocks a range of allergy eye drops from trusted UK brands. All products are dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy team and delivered to your door. If you are unsure which product is right for you, our pharmacists are available to help through our free online consultation service.

Who Are These Treatments For?

Allergy eye drops available through Cloud Pharmacy are generally suitable for adults and children aged 6 and over. Always check the individual product page and patient information leaflet for age-specific guidance.

These products may be appropriate if you are experiencing:

  • Itchy, red or watery eyes during hayfever season (spring and summer)
  • Eye irritation triggered by dust mites, pet dander, mould or other airborne allergens
  • Allergic conjunctivitis symptoms that are not fully controlled by oral antihistamines alone
  • A need for targeted eye relief without the drowsiness sometimes associated with oral antihistamines

If you experience sudden vision changes, severe eye pain, flashing lights, or symptoms of a serious allergic reaction (swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing), seek urgent medical attention immediately.

Important Safety Information

Before using allergy eye drops, you should:

  • Read the patient information leaflet supplied with the product
  • Remove contact lenses before applying eye drops unless the product is specifically labelled as safe for use with lenses. Wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting soft contact lenses, as preservatives in some eye drops can be absorbed by the lens and cause irritation
  • Do not use eye drops past their expiry date or beyond the recommended period after opening (usually 28 days for multi-dose bottles)
  • Do not share eye drops between individuals, as this can spread infection
Tell your pharmacist if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have dry eye syndrome, as some formulations may not be suitable
  • If symptoms do not improve after two weeks of use, speak to your pharmacist or GP

Allergy eye drops may cause temporary stinging or blurred vision when first applied. Do not drive or operate machinery until your vision has fully cleared.

Available Treatments

Opticrom Aqueous Eye Drops (Sodium Cromoglicate 2%)

Opticrom contains sodium cromoglicate, a mast cell stabiliser that works by preventing the release of histamine and other chemicals that cause allergic reactions in the eye. It is most effective when used regularly, ideally starting before exposure to known allergens. The usual dose is one to two drops in each eye, four times daily. Opticrom is suitable for adults and children aged 6 and over. For best results, it should be used consistently throughout the allergy season rather than only when symptoms occur.

Optrex Allergy Eye Drops (Sodium Cromoglicate 2%)

Optrex Allergy Eye Drops also contain sodium cromoglicate 2% and work through the same mast cell stabilisation mechanism as Opticrom. They are designed to relieve and prevent itchy, red and watery eyes caused by hayfever and other airborne allergens. The dosing and usage instructions are the same: one to two drops in each eye, four times daily. Suitable for adults and children aged 6 and over.

Optrex Hayfever Eye Drops

Optrex Hayfever Eye Drops provide targeted relief for eye symptoms associated with hayfever. They can be used alongside oral antihistamines for more comprehensive allergy management during the pollen season.

How Allergy Eye Drops Work

The allergy eye drops stocked by Cloud Pharmacy contain sodium cromoglicate, which belongs to a group of medicines known as mast cell stabilisers. When you come into contact with an allergen, specialised cells in the eye (mast cells) release histamine and other inflammatory chemicals. Sodium cromoglicate works by stabilising these mast cells, preventing the release of histamine before it can trigger symptoms.

This means allergy eye drops are most effective when used as a preventive measure. Starting treatment one to two weeks before hayfever season, or before known exposure to allergens, allows the medicine to build up its protective effect. However, they can also provide relief when symptoms have already started.

FAQ

How long do allergy eye drops take to work?

Sodium cromoglicate eye drops work best when used regularly over several days. They may begin to provide some relief within a few hours of the first dose, but the full protective effect typically builds over one to two weeks of consistent use. For this reason, many pharmacists recommend starting treatment before your allergy season begins.

Can I use allergy eye drops with oral antihistamines?

Yes. Allergy eye drops and oral antihistamines work through different mechanisms and can safely be used together for more comprehensive symptom relief. This combination is often recommended when eye symptoms are not fully controlled by tablets alone. There is no need to choose between the two; using both can provide better overall allergy management.

Can I wear contact lenses while using allergy eye drops?

Most allergy eye drops require you to remove contact lenses before application. This is because the preservatives in some formulations can be absorbed by soft contact lenses and cause irritation. Wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting your lenses. If you wear lenses daily and find this inconvenient, ask our pharmacy team about preservative-free options.

When should I see a doctor about my eye allergy symptoms?

Speak to your GP or optician if your eye symptoms do not improve after two weeks of treatment, are getting worse, are accompanied by significant pain or vision changes, or if you have discharge that suggests an infection rather than an allergy. Sudden vision loss, severe eye pain, or flashing lights require urgent medical attention.
