What is Elocon Scalp Lotion?
Elocon is a brand of medicine that contains the active ingredient mometasone. This is a steroid medication which is used in the treatment of eczema and other inflammatory skin conditions like psoriasis. Cream and Lotion forms are available and it is a prescription-only medicine.
Elocon is classed as a potent steroid and must only be used on the scalp. It reduces the redness, inflammation, itchiness and other symptoms associated with scalp conditions. It is a topical steroid known as a corticosteroid.
How does Elocon Scalp Lotion work?
Mometasone Furoate (0.1%), a topical corticosteroid, is the active ingredient in Elocon Scalp Lotion. Elocon Scalp Lotion is applied directly to the scalp to provide relief. Allergic reaction or over-sensitivity of the skin is the usual cause of skin inflammation. Elocon works by acting inside the skin cells to reduce the release of chemicals that cause inflammation. This results in the reduction of the swelling, itching, and redness, which help prevent scratching that can further irritate the skin.
Elocon causes a reduction in the production of red, itchy skin — calming the treated area and allowing the skin to return to its healthy natural state.
How should Elocon Scalp Lotion be applied?
Follow strictly the instructions of the doctor who prescribed Elocon Scalp Lotion for your medical condition. Also, read and follow the patient information leaflet that comes with your order of the medication.
Elocon Scalp Lotion, should be applied in a few drops to the affected areas of the scalp once daily. Gently masssage the lotion into the treated area until it disappears. Elocon should be used less frequently as soon as the condition begins to improve, or as directed by your doctor in order to reduce the likelihood of side effects.
Avoid getting Elocon Lotion in your eyes, nose, or mouth. If accidental application occurs, immediately rinse with cold water.
Thoroughly wash your hands before you start after you applied the medication, unless your hands are being treated.
Do not use airtight dressings to cover the area being treated, unless your doctor instructed you to do so. Airtight dressings or bandages will increase the body to absorb more of the medicine, increasing the possibility of side effects. If you are going to use Elocon Scalp Lotion under dressings as instructed by your doctor, cleanse the skin before the application of Elocon before applying the medicine under a fresh dressing. Nappies and waterproof pants can act as airtight dressing and increase the body’s absorption of the medicine.
Elocon lotion is flammable. Do not apply it near naked flames or lit objects. Do not smoke while applying the lotion.
Discontinue the use of the medicine if your skin condition does not improve after two weeks of treatment. Consult your doctor immediately.
Do not use Elocon Scalp Lotion longer than what is recommended by your doctor.
If the area of the skin being treated with Elocon Scalp Lotion becomes infected, stop the treatment and see your doctor.
Do not use Elocon if you are allergic to its ingredients. Do not use Elocon as a moisturiser.

No. Elocon lotion should only be used on the scalp, it is too strong for use on the face.
Can Elocon Scalp Lotion be bought over the counter?

Is Elocon lotion stronger than Dermovate?
Clobetasol propionate, the active ingredient in Dermovate, is stronger than mometasone furoate, the active ingredient in Elocon, but it constitutes just 0.05% of the whole, as opposed to 0.1% for mometasone furoate. As a result, the two treatments tend to prove similarly effective, with Elocon meriting a higher patient satisfaction score on the whole.
Is Elocon Lotion safe during pregnancy?
It depends on the case - normally it is not worth the risk. If you are pregnant and interested in using Elocon, consult your doctor to find out if it is a viable option for you.
