Overview
What Is Enstilar?
Enstilar foam, also known as Enstilar cutaneous foam, is a topical treatment prescribed for adults with psoriasis. It is often prescribed to treat plaque psoriasis (psoriasis vulgaris), the most common form of the psoriasis skin condition which is characterised by dry, raised and scaly skin.
The foam, which comes in a 60 gram can, is effective in reducing psoriasis symptoms such as inflamed, itchy and irritated skin. It is recognised as a mid to potent strength treatment for psoriasis.
Enstilar Ingredients
Enstilar foam is in the corticosteroid class of drugs, which work by reducing inflammation. It contains two active ingredients; betamethasone and calcipotriol. Betamethasone is a corticosteroid that reduces inflammatory chemicals made by the body, reducing swelling, itching and redness. Calcipotriol is a vitamin D derivative that combats the overproduction of skin cells in people with psoriasis, easing inflamed and scaly areas of skin.
Each gram of Enstilar foam contains 0.5 milligrams of betamethasone and 50 micrograms of calcipotriol. There are also inactive ingredients in Enstilar, including white petrolatum PPG-11 stearyl ether, mineral oil, all-rac-alpha-tocopheryll, and butylhydroxytoluene.
What Is Enstilar Used For?
Enstilar foam is mainly prescribed to treat psoriasis. If you have psoriasis, Enstilar can help to reduce the thickening, redness and scaling of your skin, making your skin healthier, protecting your skin from the environment and lowering your risk of infection. Enstilar treats psoriasis anywhere on the body apart from the face or genitals. You can use Enstilar on your scalp. The can comes with a spray nozzle that makes it easier to apply Enstilar in hard-to-reach areas.
How Does Enstilar Work?
With its combination of the active ingredients betamethasone and calcipotriol, Enstilar is clinically proven to reduce symptoms of plaque psoriasis.
Betamethasone is a corticosteroid which can reduce the inflammation caused by psoriasis. Not only does it suppress the immune system and reduce inflammation, relieving psoriasis symptoms like swelling, pain and itching, but it can also prevent the growth and multiplication of skin cells. The calcipotriol in Enstilar also helps to slow the growth rate of skin cells, combatting the development of scaly, dry skin patches during psoriasis flare-ups.
Enstilar vs Dovobet
Enstilar and Dovobet are similar treatments for psoriasis. Dovobet contains the same active ingredients as Enstilar; betamethasone and calcipotriol. The main difference between Enstilar and Dovobet is that while Enstilar is a foam, Dovobet comes in gel or ointment form.
You massage Dovobet gently into your scalp or skin in the same way that Enstilar is applied. However, when used on the body, Dovobet is squeezed onto the hand first before being rubbed in, unlike Enstilar, which can be applied directly onto the affected area.
Like Enstilar, Dovobet has a recommended treatment period of four weeks, a maximum daily dose of 15 g, and guidelines which state that you shouldn’t apply the medication to an area any larger than 30% of your body surface at one time.

How Long Does Enstilar Take To Work?
Used to treat psoriasis, Enstilar can give you clearer skin in under four weeks, although you may begin to see results in as little as a few days.
The recommended treatment period for Enstilar is four weeks, although treatment could be continued or restarted after this period, subject to a doctor’s approval. If you have responded to using Enstilar once per day for four weeks, you may be suitable for long-term maintenance treatment, this involves taking Enstilar twice per week on two non-consecutive days.
How to Use Enstilar Foam
You should apply Enstilar foam as prescribed for the duration of the recommended treatment period. If you are using Enstilar for psoriasis flare-ups, you may be instructed to use the foam every day. When Enstilar is for long-term maintenance treatment, a lower frequency, such as twice per week may be recommended. The amount of Enstilar you use each time you apply the foam will depend on the size of the skin area affected by psoriasis.
The maximum daily dose of Enstilar is 15 g – that is, one-quarter of a 60 g bottle. A 60 g bottle of Enstilar foam should last for a minimum of four days of treatment. If you are using other topical products that also contain the active ingredient calcipotriol, the total dose of all products containing calcipotriol shouldn’t exceed 15 g in one day. One 0.5 g dose of Enstilar (which is equivalent to pressing the lid for two seconds) should cover an area of your skin which is approximately the same size as an adult hand.
Always shake the can of Enstilar foam before use. If you are using Enstilar to treat psoriasis on the body, direct the can to the affected area, holding it at least 3 cm away. Press down the lid and spray sufficient foam to cover the area you are treating. Then, rub the foam gently into your skin. Afterwards, wash your hands.
Enstilar Foam for Scalp Psoriasis
If you are using Enstilar to treat psoriasis on the scalp, you should ensure that both your scalp and hair are completely dry before you apply the foam. Start by removing any loose skin by running a comb through your scalp and hair. After washing your hands thoroughly, hold the can at least 3 cm from your palm before pressing the lid to dispense the foam. Spray sufficient foam to cover the area you are treating, and then apply the foam to the affected area of the scalp, using your fingertips to gently rub the medication into the skin. Afterwards, wash your hands, but don’t wash your hair after applying Enstilar to the scalp.
Enstilar should be left on the treated area all day, or all night, before washing. You shouldn’t cover an area greater than 30% of your body surface.
Can I Use Enstilar Foam on My Face?
Facial skin is susceptible to corticosteroids, so you shouldn’t use Enstilar foam on your face. When applying Enstilar, you should also take great care to avoid accidentally transferring the medication to your face, mouth or eyes. This involves washing your hands thoroughly after each application. Your doctor can give you more guidance on how to avoid Enstilar coming into contact with your face.
You also cannot use Enstilar on your genitals, an area which is also sensitive to corticosteroids.
