Salamol (salbutamol) is an inhaler used in the treatment of acute symptoms of asthma. The inhaler contains the medicine salbutamol which relaxes the airways in the lungs.

Symptoms of asthma include breathlessness, wheeze and/or tight feeling in chest. The salbutamol inhaler is often known as a “reliever” and the “blue inhaler".

What is the Difference Between Salbutamol and Ventolin Inhalers (Blue Inhaler)?

Salbutamol Inhalers are commonly known under the brand of Ventolin. Salbutamol belongs to a class of drugs called beta-2 receptor agonistsand it is known as a 'short or fast acting bronchodilator', this is because this type of inhaler is used to relieve the symptoms of asthma rather than prevent them. For more information on inhalers that prevent the symptoms of asthma, you can view the clenil modulite steroid inhaler. Salbutamol acts on smooth muscle to keep your airways open to allow for easier breathing.

Salbutamol inhalers have the same active ingredient as the Salamol inhaler, Salamol is just a common brand that is works in the exact same way as the salbutamol inhaler, salbutamol is just the 'generic' name, similar to how Nurofen is the brand for Ibuprofen.

The active drug or ingredient in Salamol is Salbutamol. The device is extremely effective in relieving an asthma attack, however the method in which they help in relieving an attack may differ slightly. There is a plastic Ventolin Accuhaler (brand of salbutamol inhaler) device, which contains a foil strip with 60 evenly spaced blisters, with each blister containing 200 micrograms of microfine salbutamol and larger particle lactose (acting as a carrier). There is also pressurised Ventolin Evohalerdevice (pMDI), which delivers 100 micrograms of salbutamol per accutation (per dose) and can relieve your symptoms in up to 5 minutes

In an asthma attack, your bronchioles become obstructed; the obstruction can be attributed to one of many things and depends on the person and what their body may detrmine as an irritant or 'trigger'. This irritation in the bronchioles is known as a 'bronchospasm'. The active drug in Ventolin, Salbutamol works as a beta receptor adrenergic agonist. These receptors are abundant in various parts of the body, it is especially abundant on parts of the airway. When the drug in salbutamol binds to these beta receptors in the airway it causes the muscles to relax, allowing air to pass through with little resistance, making breathing easier.

Before you use your Salbutamol inhaler, it is important to try and control your breathing; breathe as slow as possible and try to settle the tone of your breathing. After you have breathing settles, follow the steps listed below:

  1. If you require a further dose, repeat steps 3 - 10
  2. Remove the inhaler from your mouth whilst you're holding your breath.
  3. Continue to breathe in slowly and deeply.
  4. Place the mouthpiece between your teeth, do NOT bite down. Close your lips around the mouthpiece to createa good seal.
  5. Hold your inhaler upright and shake well (five or six times)
  6. Stand or sit upright
  7. Remove the moutpiece cover from your Ventolin by gently squeezing the sides with your thumb and index finger.
  8. Breathe out gently, (away from the inhaler)
  9. Start to slowly breathe in from your mouth, at the same time press down firmly on the canister.
  10. Hold your breath for 5 seconds or for as long as you can comfortably.

  12. Replace the cap
