Medication features

Skinoren is a topical treatment of acne that contains azelaic acid. It works in two way: It reduces the growth of bacteria that clogs pores on the skin and kills off the bacteria on the skin that are responsible for acne breakouts and spots. Both actions combined make Skinoren an effective treatment for acne.

What Is Skinoren?

Skinoren cream is a topical treatment for acne, as well as some forms of rosacea. It targets the causes of spots and kills bacteria on the skin that can lead to acne.

The active ingredient of Skinoren cream is azelaic acid. There is 200mg of azelaic acid in each gram of Skinoren cream.

Skinoren Cream Uses

Skinoren cream is used primarily to treat acne, the common name for acne vulgaris.

Acne is a skin condition that is caused by hair follicles becoming blocked and can be responsible for whiteheads, pimples, and blackheads. This condition is common in teenagers but can affect people of all ages.

Sometimes, Skinoren cream may also be prescribed to treat rosacea — a common skin condition that causes redness, flushing and visible blood vessels in the face. Other symptoms may include swelling, small bumps filled with pus and thickened skin.

A trial has shown that azelaic acid — the active ingredient in Skinoren — could also be effective in promoting hair growth, though more research is needed.

How Does Skinoren Work?

Skinoren cream is a dual-action treatment, which means it works to treat acne in two ways.

Firstly, it works by reducing the growth of the keratin surface skin cells — cells that can block the pores of the skin when they mix with sebum (the natural oily, waxy substance produced by skin glands). By slowing skin cell growth, Skinoren can stop ‘pore plugs’ from forming and causing spots or blackheads

Secondly, Skinoren kills the bacterium that is related to acne (Propionibacterium). This bacteria feeds on sebum produced by the skin, producing fatty acids and waste products that cause the irritation of the skin’s sebaceous glands and lead to acne symptoms. The azelaic acid in Skinoren reduces the amount of sebum produced, which then causes a decrease in the number of bacteria, alleviating inflammation and allowing the skin to heal.

Skinoren cream can also treat acne scars, rosacea and dark spots by reducing inflammation and aiding microcirculation while moisturising and soothing the skin.

Skinoren Cream for Acne Scars

As well as treating active outbreaks of acne, some people use Skinoren cream for acne scars.

Azelaic acid, the active ingredient in Skinoren, encourages cell turnover. This can reduce the appearance of severe scars and prevent your skin from producing pigments that can vary skin tone (melanin synthesis).

Skinoren vs Finacea

Like Skinoren cream, Finacea is an anti-inflammatory topical treatment that is used to treat acne and rosacea. Finacea can come as a cream but is also available in a gel or foam form.

The two treatments both contain the same active ingredient — azelaic acid.

The significant difference between Skinoren and Finacea is the strength of the treatment. While Skinoren contains 20% azelaic acid, Finacea contains 15%. Due to its higher strength, Skinoren can be used to treat cystic, hormonal and mild acne, acne scars, dark spots, and rosacea. In comparison, Finacea is suited to milder acne and rosacea due to its lower strength. Typically, Skinoren will be prescribed for acne and Finacea is prescribed for rosacea.

As with Skinoren cream, Finacea is not available over the counter in the UK. You will need a prescription to buy Finacea from a pharmacy or online. Before a doctor is able to issue you a prescription, you will need to complete a short assessment to make sure Finacea is the right treatment for you.

Skinoren Gel vs Cream

Skinoren is also available in gel form.

Like Skinoren cream, it is manufactured by Bayer PLC and contains the same active ingredient — azelaic acid.

A major difference between Skinoren cream and gel is their strength. Skinoren Cream contains 20% azelaic acid while Skinoren Gel contains 15%. This makes the gel suitable for milder forms of acne and rosacea, rather than cystic and hormonal acne.

You require a prescription to buy Skinoren cream online in the UK, and the same applies to Skinoren gel. Skinoren gel is not available over the counter in the UK.

Skinoren Cream Reviews

Users of Skinoren cream have reported seeing significant changes in their skin after using the treatment for a few weeks. Some acne sufferers have expressed their positive interactions with the medication. Many have said that after trying several other available treatments, Skinoren was the first treatment that worked satisfactorily.

Others have claimed that while the cream can take time to show improvements, it does work and leaves the skin feeling soft with no irritation. People who suffer from rosacea have also commented that Skinoren helps reduce redness and clears up symptoms.

Overall, Skinoren cream reviews from users are very positive.

Skinoren Over the Counter

How to Use Skinoren Cream

Always use Skinoren cream exactly as your GP or pharmacist has told you to. You can also follow the instructions that come in the Skinoren 20% Cream Patient Information Leaflet.

  • You should rub Skinoren Cream into affected areas of the skin twice per day
  • Skinoren should be applied after washing
  • If you have sensitive skin, you may prefer to apply Skinoren once per day in the evening during the first week of treatment
  • You shouldn’t use Skinoren continuously for more than a year

Aim to use a single dose of approximately 2.5cm (0.5g). This should be sufficient to cover your whole face. If other parts of your body are affected, try to match the amount you use to the size of the area being treated.

Skinoren should be used for a few months continuously in order to receive its full benefits. You should see improvements to your skin after four weeks of use.

What does Skinoren cream contain?

Skinoren cream contains azelaic acid 20%. Azelaic acid has a dual mode of action; it helps to reduce the excess growth of skin cells that block pores as well as reducing the number of acne-causing bacteria living on the skin.

How do I use Skinoren cream?

Apply Skinoren to the areas affected by acne twice daily. You should cover the whole affected area, not just the individual spots. If you find that Skinoren irritates your skin initially, reduce the applications to once daily until the irritation passes and then slowly increase back to twice daily applications.

I have started using Skinoren cream and the treated area is red and irritated, is this normal?

Redness and irritation of the treated area can occur when you use Skinoren Cream for the first time. This is not usually serious and normally subsides within a week. During this time reduce the frequency of Skinoren application to once daily to allow your skin to recover and then slowly build up to using it twice daily.

Is Skinoren available for next day delivery?

Yes, we understand that sometimes you want to get your treatment as soon as possible. If ordered before 3:30pm Monday to Friday, Skinoren Cream is available for next day delivery.

Can I use Skinoren when pregnant?

There have been no formal studies carried out on the effects of azelaic acid in pregnant or breastfeeding women. However, animal studies do indicate the potential for effects with respect to pregnancy, embryo-fetal development and postnatal development. However, dose levels without observed adverse effects were well above the maximum recommended human dose.

It is advisable to avoid using Skinoren on the chest while breastfeeding, in case the cream is ingested by the baby.

Can I use other acne treatments with Skinoren cream (azelaic acid)?

You can combine Skinoren with oral antibiotic acne treatments, but Skinoren should not be used with any other acne creams as it may cause excessive drying or irritation to your skin.

Will Skinoren bleach or lighten my clothes?

This topical treatment lacks the potential to bleach or lighten clothes. However, it is recommended that you use this cream at night to avoid soiling your clothing.

Is it safe to buy Skinoren online?

Yes, as long as you are buying from a website that is a legally operating and regulated pharmacy it is perfectly safe to buy Skinoren Cream online. Cloud Pharmacy is an Online Pharmacy based in United Kingdom and has all the necessary regulation to be able to safely provide convenient access to genuine prescription acne treatments through our Online Pharmacy service.
