Medication features

Duac gel is used to treat acne. It is a topical gel that comes in two different strengths (3% and 5%). It contains two active ingredients that work in different ways to treat acne-causing bacteria. Benzoyl Peroxide is a peeling agent that works by clearing the pores in the skin, whilst Clindamycin is an antibiotic that fights the bacteria that causes outbreaks in the skin. The gel is designed for use once a day, usually in the evening before bedtime.

What Is Duac Gel?

Duac Gel is a topical treatment that is effective against mild to moderate acne and works to reduce whiteheads, pimples and blackheads. Acne is a skin condition caused by the blockage of hair follicles. It is common in teenagers but can affect people of all ages.

There are two active ingredients in Duac Gel: clindamycin, an antibiotic, and benzoyl peroxide, a bactericidal substance that kills harmful bacteria.

Duac Gel is available in two strengths: as 1% clindamycin and 3% benzoyl peroxide, or as 1% clindamycin and 5% benzoyl peroxide.

You can also buy Duac Gel under its generic name, clindamycin benzoyl peroxide gel.

How Does Duac Gel Work?

Duac Gel contains two active ingredients, which combat acne in two different ways.

Clindamycin is an antibiotic that stops the bacteria that causes acne from spreading.

Benzoyl peroxide then kills bacteria and removes blockages from the pores of the skin. This breaks down whiteheads, pimples and blackheads, combatting acne and reducing inflammation.

What Is Duac Gel Used For?

Duac Gel is a treatment for mild to moderate acne, as well as pimples and spots.

Acne occurs when keratin surface skin cells mix with sebum (a natural, oil substance produced by skin glands) and block the skin’s pores. Duac Gel is effective on facial acne, as well as acne that presents itself in other areas of the body, such as the upper back and neck. The treatment can treat and clear acne, making it less likely to return.

Duac Gel may not be suitable for you if:

  • You are currently using another acne medication, particularly those containing vitamin A or alcohol-based treatments
  • You have had inflammatory bowel disease
  • You are allergic to macrolide antibiotics

If you aren't sure whether Duac Gel is suitable for you, speak to your GP or pharmacist for advice.

How Long Does Duac Gel Take To Work?

As with every acne medication, Duac Gel can take time to work. However, you should see an improvement after around one month.

If you do not see any improvement after two months of using Duac Gel, you should stop the treatment and speak to your GP for further guidance.

You shouldn’t use Duac Gel for longer than 12 weeks at one time unless instructed to do so by your doctor.

Treclin Gel vs Duac

Treclin Gel contains the active ingredient tretinoin, a form of vitamin A that is used to relieve acne. Like Duac Gel, it contains the macrolide antibiotic clindamycin, but unlike Duac, it doesn’t contain benzoyl peroxide.

As with Duac, it is typically recommended that Treclin Gel be used for ten to 12 weeks, once per day at bedtime. The two treatments also share some potential common side effects, such as dry skin, itchy skin, and a burning sensation at the application site.

Epiduo Gel vs Duac

Like Duac Gel, Epiduo Gel is an acne treatment that contains benzoyl peroxide as one of its active ingredients. Whereas Duac Gel contains the antibiotic macrolide antibiotic clindamycin, Epiduo Gel contains adapalene (also known by its branded name Differin).

Adapalene is a retinoid (vitamin A derivative) rather than an antibiotic. Adapalene works with benzoyl peroxide to unblock the pores of the skin. It does this by loosening skin cells and reducing oil production.

Epiduo is used in a similar way to Duac Gel. It is applied once per day, in a thin film over the affected area. As with Duac Gel, Epiduo can take time to work, but you should see an improvement after one month of use. Like Duac, you should stop using Epiduo if you haven’t seen any improvement to your skin after two months of use.

Duac Gel vs Differin

Differin is the brand name for adapalene, a human-made Vitamin C derivative that is in the retinoid class of drugs. Adapalene is the active ingredient in Differin, therefore Duac Gel and Differin have different active ingredients.

Despite this, they are both topical acne treatments that work similarly — unblocking the skin’s pores and allowing the sebum to escape. Adapalene does this by boosting the turnover of skin cells. It can also act as an anti-inflammatory.

Duac Gel and Differin are used in similar ways and are applied once per day before going to bed. Like Duac, it can take a few weeks of using Differin to see significant improvements.

The two acne treatments also share some of the same common potential side effects, such as skin irritation, dry skin and a burning sensation at the application site.

Duac Gel And Pregnancy

Because Duac Gel contains benzoyl peroxide, it may not be suitable in pregnancy. If you are pregnant, you should discuss an alternative to Duac Gel with your doctor.

It is usually safe to use Duac Gel when you are breastfeeding. However, if you are breastfeeding you shouldn’t use Duac Gel on your chest area. Wash your hands before breastfeeding to ensure your baby doesn’t come into contact with Duac Gel.

Can I Buy Duac Gel Over The Counter?

Duac Gel is available on prescription only in the UK. You cannot buy Duac Gel over the counter.

How To Use Duac Gel

You should use Duac Gel once per day in the evening. Before you apply the gel, use an oil-free acne wash and rinse the treated area with warm water, before gently drying by patting the skin. Squeeze out a small amount of the gel from the tube and apply a thin film to the skin using your fingers.

It is important that you follow recommended guidelines for Duac Gel. If you use the gel less often than recommended, it might not be effective in improving your skin. If you use too much Duac Gel, your skin problem might not improve faster, and the chances of experiencing side effects are increased.

If you miss an application of Duac Gel, use it when you remember. If it’s nearly time for your next application, skip the missed application and apply the gel at the normal time.

A full list of instructions on how to use Duac Gel can be found in the Duac Gel Patient Information Leaflet that comes with your treatment.

What Is Duac Gel?

Duac is a treatment for mild to moderate acne. It is available in gel form and contains two active ingredients - clindamycin, an antibiotic; and benzoyl peroxide, an antibacterial and keratolytic (peeling) agent, these 2 ingredients work together to kill the ACNE bacteria and minimise blackheads and whiteheads.

How Long Duac Take To Work?

After 2-5 weeks you should notice an improvement in your skin with daily use, with the maximum benefit visible in around 8-12 weeks. Treatment should only be continued up to a maximum of 12 weeks.

Is Duac an effective Acne treatment?

Duac is a treatment which combines two of the most commonly-used acne treatments. No treatment will completely cure acne, but Duac should remove 2/3 of blemishes within 30 days of use.

First, it contains clindamycin, which is the top antibiotic used to treat acne in both the UK and in Canada. Unlike minocycline (the primary treatment in the US), it will not cause teeth to become stained or discoloured.

The second component is benzoyl peroxide. This is the most popular ingredient in all acne treatments. It contains benzoin and hydrogen peroxide, which kill acne bacteria which remains after the clindamycin treatment. This combination of ingredients ensures that the bacteria will not become resistant to one antibiotic.

Duac tends to work within 48 hours, which is notably faster than other combination acne treatments such as Zineryt or Differin.

Does Duac gel cause dry skin?

1 in 10 patients who use Duac will notice dry skin to some extent. This may lead to mild redness and peeling where the treatment is applied.

This side effect may be more pronounced when Duac is used in combination with certain other medicines, cosmetics, toiletries or soaps. Specifically, products which contain isotretinoin, tretinoin and tazarotene may interact with benzoyl peroxide and lead to skin irritation. If you must use these products as well as Duac, try to spread out the time of day when you apply them.

How do I store Duac Gel?

Duac should be stored below 25°C and kept for a maximum of two months after opening. Keep all medications away from children.

Is Duac Gel safe during pregnancy?

Duac Gel is not recommended during pregnancy. This is because it contains Benzoyl Peroxide. Consult a medical professional for advice on a suitable alternative if you are pregnant.

Should I keep using my moisturiser alongside Duac?

A moisturiser will help to prevent dry skin, which is very important in treating acne. Moisturiser can be applied over a layer of Duac. However, do not use a moisturiser containing alcohol, as this may cause further skin irritation.
