What Is Finacea?

Finacea Gel, the branded version of azelaic acid, is a prescription drug that is used to treat mild to moderate rosacea in adults.

Rosacea is also known as adult acne due to its similar effects on peoples’ complexions. The condition commonly causes redness, inflammation and spots around specific areas of the face. These areas include the cheeks, the forehead, the chin and the nose.

Finacea is typically prescribed to treat the papules and pustules that rosacea can cause. These are red bumps that develop pus in the centre, at which point they become pustules. The active ingredient azelaic acid helps to reduce the formation of these bumps. As such, it is classed as a topical anti-acne agent.

How Does Finacea Work?

Azelaic acid, the active ingredient in Finacea, plays a role in unblocking facial pores. Azelaic acid can reduce the growth of keratin on skin cells. This can block the pores and sebaceous glands on the face, which contributes to bumps and pustules.

It is also believed that azelaic acid may have some antimicrobial effects. A specific kind of bacteria that is associated with acne. This is called Propionibacterium acnes.

This microorganism feeds on the sebum produced by the sebaceous glands on the face. As it does this, it produces waste products that can irritate and inflame the glands. By reducing the amount of sebum, azelaic acid kills these bacteria and reduces inflammation as a result.

Finacea During Pregnancy

If you are pregnant or planning on becoming pregnant soon, you should discuss this with a medical professional before beginning treatment with Finacea gel.

Not many reliable studies have been done into the effects of Finacea in pregnant women, so the impact of the medication on pregnancies is not fully known. However, it is believed to be safe to use while pregnant.

Animal studies have also demonstrated that Finacea did not cause medical issues in pregnant individuals.

If you are breastfeeding or plan on breastfeeding, you should also talk to a medical professional about your options. Whether or not Finacea crosses into human milk is currently unknown.

However, it is not uncommon for medications to cross into breast milk, so there is a possibility that Finacea could cause issues for nursing infants. As such, it is not recommended to use Finacea gel while nursing a child.

Skinoren vs Finacea

Skinoren cream is another product that can be used to treat acne and rosacea.

Like Finacea 15% gel, it also contains azelaic acid as the active ingredient. Both medications have anti-inflammatory qualities as they both reduce the production of keratin in skin cells and reduce the clogging of pores.

The main difference between Skinoren and Finacea is their strength. Both are prescription-only medications, but Skinoren contains a higher concentration of azelaic acid by volume.

Finacea contains azelaic acid at a concentration of 15% whereas Skinoren cream has a 20% concentration of the active ingredient.

Typically, Finacea is prescribed for treating rosacea and Skinoren is used to reduce the symptoms of acne. However, they can be used interchangeably depending on the circumstances.

Finacea vs Metrogel

Both Finacea 15% gel and Metrogel gel are topical treatments that aim to reduce inflammation, irritation and redness of the face brought on by rosacea. Metrogel is only prescribed to treat rosacea, whereas Finacea may also be used to treat acne.

These medications belong to different drug classes. While Finacea contains azelaic acid as its active ingredient, Metrogel is an antibiotic cream. Finacea contains azelaic acid whereas Metrogel contains 0.75% metronidazole.

This antibiotic inhibits the growth of bacteria on the face, which reduces inflammation and redness in patients with rosacea. The different ingredients mean the medications can have slightly different side effects.
