Overview
What Is Efracea?
Efracea is an effective medication used to treat rosacea, a long-term skin condition. Adults with rosacea are prescribed Efracea 40 mg MR (modified release) capsules to treat symptoms such as blushing, red bumps and pimples.
The medicine contains the active ingredient doxycycline, a tetracycline antibiotic that treats bacterial infections. Doxycycline can also be prescribed as tablets, a syrup or a liquid, and is used to treat other conditions such as acne, bacterial pneumonia and chlamydia.
What Is Efracea Used For?
Efracea 40 mg MR capsules are used to treat rosacea. Rosacea causes symptoms such as:
- Flushing or blushing in your face, with blood vessels becoming visible
- Swollen bumps or pimples
- A burning sensation
- Eye problems
- An enlarged nose (due to the skin thickening)
Rosacea can affect anybody but is understood to be most common in caucasian middle-aged women. While there is no cure for rosacea, safe treatments such as Efracea can be effective in reducing or eliminating symptoms.
Efracea is prescribed to adults and children over the age of 12. Rosacea is very uncommon in young children. However, doxycycline (Efracea’s active ingredient) may sometimes be prescribed to children under the age of 12 to treat other infections.
For some people, Efracea may not be suitable. Before you take Efracea, be sure to tell your doctor if you have:
- Liver problems
- Kidney problems
- Had an allergic reaction to doxycycline
- Had an allergic reaction to any other medicine
- Lupus (an autoimmune disease)
- Oesophagitis (inflamed food pipe)
- Myasthenia gravis (a chronic autoimmune disease that causes muscle weakness)
- Or if you are pregnant or are breast-feeding
There are also various other medicines and supplements that may not mix well with Efracea. Before taking Efracea, tell your doctor if you are currently taking:
- Indigestion medicine
- Other antibiotics
- Stomach ulcer medicines
- Acne medicines
- Warfarin
- Ciclosporin
- Medicines for epilepsy
- Supplements containing aluminium, calcium, bismuth, magnesium, zinc or iron
How Does Efracea Work?
The active ingredient of Efracea, doxycycline, is a tetracycline antibiotic that works by preventing bacteria from spreading and clearing up pimples and bumps. It has an anti-inflammatory effect which reduces unpleasant symptoms such as soreness, burning skin and flushing.
Research has shown that taking Efracea 40 mg MR capsules once per day is effective in treating adults with moderate to severe rosacea. The medicine was highlighted for its “favourable safety profile” and absence of antibiotic selection pressure, meaning it doesn’t lead to antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
Efracea and Alcohol
It is best not to drink alcohol when you are taking Efracea, as it might make the medicine less effective. While small amounts of alcohol are unlikely to reduce Efracea’s effectiveness, drinking larger amounts can make the doxycycline in Efracea less effective at treating bacterial infections such as rosacea.
If you are concerned about alcohol use while you are taking Efracea, or have any questions, speak to your doctor.

How Long Does Efracea Take To Work?
Doxycycline, the active ingredient in Efracea, works slowly to treat rosacea. While some people may find that their rosacea symptoms are reduced in a few days, for others, it might take weeks for the medicine to be effective. Your doctor will typically evaluate you after around four to six weeks of using Efracea to assess how well it is working.
Even if your rosacea symptoms have cleared, it is important to continue taking Efrasea as long as prescribed.
How to Take Efracea 40mg MR Capsules
Efrazea capsules are taken once per day in the morning, on an empty stomach. Ideally, you will take your Efracea at least one hour before, or two hours after eating. The capsule should be swallowed whole with water. Ensure you take your Efracea capsule with enough water to wash it down your throat easily, reducing the risk of irritating your throat or food pipe (oesophagus).
Don’t take your Efracea with milk or any other dairy product, or consume dairy products any less than three hours after taking Efracea, as the calcium contained in the dairy could reduce Efracea’s effectiveness. The capsules should be swallowed whole, and never chewed or split.
If you forget to take a dose of Efracea, take it as soon as you remember unless it is nearly time for the next dose. Don’t take a double dose to compensate for the forgotten dose. If you take more Efracea than prescribed, this risks damaging your body. Seek immediate medical help if you have taken an overdose of Efracea.
