What Is Flexiseq?

Flexiseq Gel is a drug-free topical treatment for osteoarthritis. It relieves osteoarthritis symptoms such as joint stiffness and neuropathic pain and is available in a 50 g or 100 g tube.

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that is the most common form of arthritis. It develops most frequently in the hands, knees, hips and spine, and involves the wearing down of the cartilage within a joint, affecting the underlying bone.

Flexiseq Active contains a light formulation that offers osteoarthritis sufferers a cost-effective treatment for the pain, discomfort and stiffness caused by osteoarthritis. The gel does this by lubricating the joints uniquely with ‘SEQ Tech’ technology and provides a therapeutic solution for people with osteoarthritis to stay mobile.

Flexiseq Gel is also available in another variety — Flexiseq Gel for Joint Wear and Tear — which delivers similar benefits.

How Does Flexiseq Work?

Flexiseq is applied topically to an affected joint and delivers lubricating ingredients directly into joints damaged by osteoarthritis.

The treatment contains Sequessomes — tiny hydrating oil droplets that combat joint stiffness and pain. The Sequessomes name is trademarked by Ascension Healthcare, the manufacturer of Flexiseq. Sequessomes travel through the skin to the joint, where they become suspended in natural joint fluid (synovial fluid). This creates a lubricating cover over the damaged cartilage.

By improving lubrication through the delivery of key ingredients, Flexiseq can relieve pain and decrease joint stiffness. In this video from Flexiseq’s manufacturer, the company explains how Sequessome vesicles penetrate the joint to produce a lubricating layer that serves to protect damaged surfaces from friction and wear.

What Is Flexiseq Used For?

Flexiseq Gel is suitable for all types of osteoarthritis. By providing lubrication to joints that are stiff and sore, it allows people with osteoarthritis to enjoy a greater range of motion. The treatment can be used with osteoarthritis medicines safely, as well as medicines for other medical conditions.

Flexiseq may not be suitable for you if:

  • You have a dermatological condition that affects the application site
  • You have skin lesions at the application site
  • You currently have a prescription for a different topical treatment

If you can’t use Flexiseq for one of these reasons, there are other non-prescription treatments that may be suitable for you. These include oral painkillers, including paracetamol or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen, and other topical gels and creams, such as ibuprofen or diclofenac gel.

When you have not managed to relieve osteoarthritis pain, stiffness and discomfort using non-prescription treatments, you should talk to your doctor. They will be able to advise you on alternative treatment options.

Flexiseq vs Voltarol

Flexiseq and Voltarol are both branded gels that are topical treatments for osteoarthritis.

The main difference between the two is that Flexiseq Gel is a non-drug treatment whereas Voltarol contains the active ingredient diclofenac — a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). While Flexiseq works by delivering lubricating ingredients directly into the affected joint, diclofenac works by reducing the hormones that cause inflammation and pain.

Due to the potency of the NSAID diclofenac, Voltarol has some different potential side effects to Flexiseq. Potential side effects of Flexiseq include mild reactions such as irritated skin and redness, whereas potential side effects of Voltarol include nausea, dizziness, swelling, headache, constipation and vomiting.

Both are available to buy online, as well as in high-street and supermarket pharmacies. Both Flexiseq and Voltarol can be bought over the counter in the UK.

Flexiseq and Voltarol shouldn’t be applied at the same time although you could use them one after another if you wish. It is important that you fully apply one treatment before using the other.

FX Silica vs Flexiseq

Like Flexiseq, FX Silica is a drug-free topical treatment that targets the pain and stiffness associated with osteoarthritis.

Its ingredients differ from those of Flexiseq, an aqueous gel that contains nanoscale lipid vesicles. FX Silica contains:

  • Organic silica, a mineral essential for healthy connective tissue in the cartilage, muscles, tendons and ligaments
  • Blackcurrant, which boosts the cardiovascular and immune systems and is a natural anti-inflammatory
  • Chondroitin and glucosamine, which stabilises, protects and assists in the repair of damaged joint cartilage that is the source of osteoarthritis pain

Because FX Silica and Flexiseq are drug-free treatments, they both have milder potential side effects than NSAID gels for osteoarthritis. The two treatments are applied similarly; two to three times a day onto the affected area.

Flexiseq and High Blood Pressure

If you have high blood pressure, you should note that Flexiseq can be used with blood pressure medication. Because Flexiseq is drug-free, there will be no interactions between it and blood pressure treatments.

Flexiseq can be a good option for people with high blood pressure who are not able to use other osteoarthritis treatments such as ketoprofen, ibuprofen and naproxen.

Flexiseq Reviews

Users online have commented on the effectiveness of Flexiseq in addressing the uncomfortable symptoms of osteoarthritis, particularly pain and inflammation. Reviewers have cited the fast-acting capability of the treatment, and the fact that only a small amount is required to provide noticeable relief. Athletes and sportspeople have described the peace of mind that they felt using Flexiseq regularly, as it is drug-free.

Some users found that Flexiseq relieved pain and improved mobility in a matter of days, while for others, the treatment took two weeks or more to provide a significant improvement.

A 2013 trial treated 1,395 participants with Flexiseq for 12 weeks. It was found that Flexiseq had similar effectiveness to celecoxib tablets and ketoprofen gel in relieving pain and stiffness and improving function.

In another trial, 866 participants were treated using Flexiseq, and it was found that the condition of most participants did improve. A study that looked at 555 participants treated with Flexiseq for 12 weeks found that those using the treatment reported a 40% to 45% decrease in stiffness and pain.

Can I Buy Flexiseq Over the Counter?

How to Apply Flexiseq Gel

Flexiseq Gel is a topical treatment that should only be used externally — applied onto the skin directly. The application site should be the skin that surrounds the joints affected by osteoarthritis.

You should apply Flexiseq twice per day; once in the morning and once at night. Ensure that you use enough gel to sufficiently cover the affected joints. Using your hands, spread the gel evenly over the entire skin surface that covers the joint.

Before you cover your skin with any clothing, let Flexiseq dry for ten minutes. If you don’t give the gel a chance to dry, you may prevent the product from absorbing properly. If the gel takes longer than 15 minutes to dry, use a little less gel for your next application.

After you have finished applying the gel, wash your hands.

How Long Does It Take for Flexiseq to Work?

With repeated use of Flexiseq, you should begin to experience pain relief. Ascension Health, the manufacturer of Flexiseq, says that symptoms can be eased in just two days.

However, for some people, the medicine may take a few more days or several weeks to gradually improve symptoms.

If you aren’t seeing any noticeable improvement after using Flexiseq for this time, speak to your GP or pharmacist for further advice. They may suggest an alternative treatment.
